Automatic hole pattern analysis prevents errors right from the digital product development stage

invenio Virtual Technologies (VT) extracts crucial information from geometric data for design and assembly

Complex machines, vehicles and industrial plants often contain thousands of bores and holes. These serve as assembly, fitting, handling or functional bores and are essential for subsequent manufacturing and assembly. It is precisely these geometric features that form the focus of a new VT technology. This technology automatically detects bores and holes within 3D geometric data and makes their properties available for analysis and inspection processes.

Over 25 years of geometric expertise as the basis for intelligent feature recognition

The new algorithm automatically identifies bores and holes in digital components and determines their diameter, depth, position, orientation and number. In addition to geometric visualisation, all features are also provided as structured information.

The real added value comes from the automatic hole pattern analysis. Detected holes can be grouped, related to one another and examined for deviations. Differences in position, diameter, depth or direction are automatically detected and highlighted. Particularly in large-scale development projects, numerous designers work in parallel on different assemblies and components. If, during design changes, individual holes are not adjusted or are incorrectly carried over, the problems often remain undetected for a long time. The consequences often only become apparent during assembly – resulting in time-consuming rework, delays and significant additional costs.

With this new technology, such errors can be identified as early as the digital product development stage. Design engineers and developers receive automated validation of their hole patterns and can rectify critical deviations long before any physical hardware is produced.

More than just error detection: the foundation for more efficient development and assembly processes

The automatic detection and analysis of drill holes not only provides transparency regarding potential design errors, but also opens up additional possibilities for utilising existing geometric data. For example, a complete overview of all holes and connections in a component can be generated automatically. This provides valuable information for assembly planning, production preparation and costing at an early stage in the development process.

Assembly departments can use this data to better estimate the subsequent assembly workload and plan resources more effectively. At the same time, production planning and costing departments receive reliable information on the scope of machining required and potential manufacturing costs. With its automatic hole pattern analysis, invenio VT is expanding its modular VT-DMU software suite with another powerful module. This represents a further step towards intelligent product development that automatically harnesses the potential of geometric data.
