From specific requirements to practical application

How invenio Virtual Technologies (VT) develops bespoke solutions, complements existing system landscapes and creates applications that deliver added value through a pragmatic approach.

Munich, 26 August 2026 – Not every technical challenge requires a large-scale product solution right from the start. Particularly in complex development and engineering processes, the initial focus is often on closing a specific gap or ensuring the reliable continuation of a process. Plot2D demonstrates how such a requirement can give rise to a practical application.

When standard solutions reach their limits

Specific requirements often call for functions that standard solutions do not cover. VT-DMU, a modular software toolkit with specialised functions for geometric data, forms the basis for their implementation. The existing modules can be combined specifically for use cases and utilised for new applications. This means that even individual requirements can be implemented on an existing technological basis.

From 2D to 3D and back again

Plot2D arose from a specific customer enquiry during the transition to 3D data. The aim was to eliminate the need for design engineers to derive 2D drawings separately. Instead, dimensions, tolerances and other information relevant to manufacturing are stored directly in the 3D model as Product Manufacturing Information (PMI) and can be viewed and utilised by the relevant departments directly within the 3D model. However, 2D documentation was still required for production. Plot2D therefore utilises the PMI stored in the 3D model and automatically converts it into printable 2D documents.

In production, however, a digital representation is not always the most practical solution. Particularly in workshops where, for example, welding takes place, printed documentation is often more versatile under the working conditions there than digital representations. Thus, the 3D model remains the central source of information, whilst the production team can work with the representation best suited to their needs. Plot2D is directly connected to the PLM system via an interface.

For invenio Virtual Technologies, the solution exemplifies an approach that goes beyond the development of individual applications. “Plot2D illustrates very well how our approach works: we start with the specific challenge. Once we understand this, we can develop a solution that integrates seamlessly into the existing system landscape and can be further developed as required,” says Michael Pretschuh, Head of Sales and Marketing at invenio Virtual Technologies.
